Horizon Residence
Sustainable Design — Costa Rica
Perched on a hillside overlooking the Pacific, Horizon Residence is designed to tread lightly on the land. The house operates entirely off-grid — powered by solar panels, cooled by natural ventilation, and nourished by rainwater collection.
The material palette is local and regenerative: rammed earth walls provide thermal mass, FSC-certified ipe wood clads the interiors, and the roof structure uses locally harvested bamboo. Every material was chosen for its low embodied energy and ability to age gracefully.
The house is organized around an open-plan living pavilion with sliding glass walls that dissolve the boundary between inside and out. A natural swimming pool, planted with native aquatic species, eliminates the need for chemicals while creating a habitat for local wildlife.
